Abstract
In 2024, the University of Miskolc co-hosted the largest - in terms of the number of participants - multi-sport event ever held in Hungary, the European Universities Games. The right to organise was won by the Hungarian University Sports Federation in 2018, in close cooperation with the University of Debrecen, the University of Miskolc and the cities of Debrecen and Miskolc. In Miskolc, our organisation, the Sport Club of University of Miskolc, was responsible for the preparatory and organizational tasks. We considered the implementation of the volunteer program of the event to be strategically important for the success of the event. However, for our local organization, securing the necessary number of volunteers, compiling an attractive program for the Generation Z target group, and implementing a cooperation that would satisfy all parties involved was an extraordinary challenge. In order to overcome the challenges ahead and ensure the success of the event preparation, MEAFC launched a small-scale cooperation project, the "Future Volunteers – Key to success is Generation Z" project, implemented within the ERASMUS+ funding programme and with the support of the European Union. In this case study, we will present the preparation process that took place within the project. We will describe the background of the event and the challenges that brought the project to life, as well as the methodology. By reviewing the main steps of the volunteer program planning and volunteer management tasks, we will present the experiences of the project and finally its afterlife and impacts. The study considered the main result of the project - Guidelines for Volunteer Management at Multisport Events - summarizes the professional recommendations of the theoretical research, supplemented with the collected good practices and case studies in relation to the two events. As project participants, we learned a lot about what motivates young adults, what tools we can use to make administration and processes more efficient, how we can support and take care of our volunteers at our events, and how we can help them learn so that they receive the important positive experience and attention.
