Abstract

This paper examines the role of volunteering in Hungarian sport, mainly based on international literature. It presents the traditions and characteristics of volunteering in sport and the specificities of episodic volunteering related to sporting events. Sport, as a specific social subsystem, plays a significant role in community life, in which volunteering is of paramount importance. The research explores the role of volunteers in sports organisations, with a particular focus on the activities and motivations of volunteers working at sporting events. It is found that involvement in sport has a significant impact on the commitment and motivation of volunteers. Understanding the motivation of volunteers and mapping their social characteristics is essential to increase the effectiveness of volunteering in sport. The close link between volunteering and sport opens up new opportunities for promoting social participation and community values.
