Abstract

The international volunteer program of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture (VEB2023 ECoC) aims to promote volunteering throughout Europe and to train organizations in the Veszprém-Balaton region. Their goal also helped to establish a diverse international community and supported the personal and professional growth of volunteers. The program operates in two main directions: long-term individual volunteering and group volunteer projects. The International Volunteering Program is implemented within the framework of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program, and it offers international youth the opportunity to participate in the VEB2023 ERC program. The European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program focuses on solidarity, community building, and diversity aiming to develop international relationships and strengthen European identity, which elements are also of fundamental importance for the VEB2023 ECoC and the city's international relations. This study presents the main results and achievements of the program, including the promotion of volunteering in the region, the strengthening of local communities, and the establishment of a support network. Through volunteerism and community activities, local communities have been strengthened, and the program has facilitated the establishment of connections with other ECoC cities and their twin cities. The personal development of volunteers and the improvement of their professional competencies have also contributed to the program's success. The promotion of volunteerism and community-building are keys to the VEB2023 ECoC program, bringing new dimensions to Veszprém and the region's international cultural relations.
